Design in Shapes for St. Patrick’s Day and beyond

St. Patrick's Day is one of the holidays which is not very popular in Germany. Yes, some of us have heard of it but I guess most of us have never diged into this tradition.
Me not either until I have been to a Sauna Night a few years ago where the staff played, while throwing water on the oven, the story of the little green guy and his gold. That was when I did some research and got more into the St. Patrick's Day traditions.

And that is what I came up with.

I wanted a simple design you could place on your wall as a seasoned wall art but also as something permanent and because of that I thought that it wouldn't have a lot of elements on it. One thing I stumbled over all the time was a shamrock so I thought why not place shamrock's into a heart?

I wanted to give it a neutral look with shamrock's in different sizes and even different shamrocks inside the heart.

And, even better, this design is really easy to create. Of course I have a detailed video in the Safari Lounge for you but in case you already know the basics here is a short tutorial.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial and there are many more in the Safari Lounge Designer Classes. You can check it out for 7 days for free.

1. Get Watercolor Paper

Start by creating a document. In this case we need watercolor paper. You have two options to get it. Wether you have some watercolor paper and scan it or you get a package from one of the known stores with a commercial use license.
I have an entire pack for you in different ratios (which you will have to create from wherever you get your watercolor paper) in the Safari Lounge (free for download, even if you only make use of the 7 Days free trial).
That's how the package looks, you can see I created them in different ratios which makes it much easier for you to place your design on it in different sizes:

Start with one of the watercolor papers included in my package or open up and resize what you got. Once done you need to draw a heart.
I'm using Adobe Photoshop for this work but you could definitely use something else as well. I got a package with lots of different hearts from Creative Fabrica* and downloaded it from there. Once you have it open the .csh file in Photoshop and you have all the hearts in your shape library:

Just click on on of the heart shapes and add it to your paper. I have used 2000px for that but it was much too small. You can increase it infinitely and it won't get blurry so adapt it to your needs.

This is how my document looks after I have added and centred my heart.

I have then picked a set of watercolor shamrocks*, cut off the stems and started to "throw" on the heart. Make sure you really throw them - it shouldn't look regular but rather thrown on your paper. Make also sure you follow the shape of the heart and turn off the heart every now and then to see how your heart looks without the shape in the background.

I have also used larger and smaller shamrocks as well as re-colored them. Some are darker and some brighter in some areas are  more shamrocks in others less.
And I also left some white space in the image. I think this helps people to use the printable not only during the St. Patrick's Day season but for example as a kitchen or office wall art.
