Colour is best to recolour via hues rather than colouring a greyscale image. Greyscales will colour the entire image in tones of the colour used - often giving an unrealistic image. Recolour a colour image via hues you can then adjust for eg. the reds in the leaf colour while leaving the greens the same colour. PNG files come in colour but if you require greyscale - simply desaturate. This also saves on computer data space. Why fill your computer space up when it's not nescessary.
