June 15th to 30th Progressive Scrap

To those new to the challenge I'm Elaine aka emst and I host the monthly Progressive scrap and it is almost Progressive Scrap time once again.

Like I said last month at the end of the May Progressive we are going to do something a little differently. We are going to do a
I Stump You, You Stump Me Progressive. I know some of you that haven’t done this before are thinking what the heck is she talking about.

Well every month I try to stump all of you by throwing in various elements and maybe adding a paper later or even adding the frame
one step and then waiting a couple of steps to add the photos. Unfortunately you are all too good, I have come close but I haven’t stumped
any of you YET.

Now it is your turn to try and stump everyone that participates in the challenge.
I will give you the first step which will be very very simple, I'll be back on Friday the 15th with that step.

We have been averaging at least 20 participants each month for the challenge so for the remaining four steps there will be teams. Each
team will have 4 or 5 team members (according to however many we get doing the challenge). Each person on each team will choose one
element, paper, photo, journaling or title for their step. This way each step will have at least 4 or 5 new items to be added to their page.
Same rules apply, no moving anything once it’s placed down, the other rules will be listed below.

You will have one person (Team Captain) from your team to post all 4 or 5 items that your team decides on in the thread on their date that the step is to be posted.
I won’t even know what the items will be until I read the post. I will copy and paste it though in the first post of the thread once I see it so you can check there for the
next step like some of you do each month.
Once the Teams are set, whoever is the Team Captain for your team that is who you will send a Private Message to with your element, etc. choice to.
Be sure to send your choice to the team captain ahead of time.

You will have 4 days for Step One which I will post on the 15th so the Teams will have time to be set for the rest of the challenge.
Team Captains try to post your steps early in the day or if you are in a different time zone where your day begins earlier than EST you can
post them as long as it’s the date stated.

Team 1 will post their step (which will be Step 2) on Tuesday June 19th
Team 2 will post their step (which will be Step 3) on Friday June 22nd
Team 3 will post their step (which will be Step 4) on Monday June 25th
Team 4 will post their step (which will be Step 5) on Thursday June 28th

And one other thing, if any team wants to throw in the journaling or wordart at any point they can it doesn’t have to be
in the last step. As you post a comment to this I will add your name to a list and put the names to a team number.

RULES Please Read

There will be five steps to this Progressive Scrap.

To receive the bonus for this challenge each step has to be completed within the time frame given.
You will post each step in the Progressive Scrap Gallery (http://www.digidesignresort.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=533) and then link it back here.

Once you place something down on your layout you cannot move it.

Only add to your layout what is listed for each step. Shadowing can be added at any time.

I'll let you know how many days you have for each step and I'll give you the date that each step needs to be completed by.

I will come back here to the original post to add the next step this way we can keep this challenge all together in one thread.

Please if you have any questions be sure to ask and remember this is for fun. Hope you're all ready to start.

Frame is made from background papers - Cabaret Vintage by Kreen Kreations and FlorjuScrap, gate and scatter from April Promise by Annka Designs, angel figurine from Strokes and Traces by KakleiDesigns. And the photo is the same - extracted and flipped horizonal then blended into background paper. All are DDR kits.

Jemima I don't know if you have the Polygonal Lasso Tool or the Quick Selection Tool.
If you have the Polygonal Lasso Tool you can go very slowly around the person you want to extract.
Once you do that you will have to use your eraser to get rid of unwanted pixels, this takes time, then you can use a
very low Gaussin Blur to soften the edges, about a 1.0
Quick Selection Tool does just that and you can select more or if you select too much you can select less with the tool.
Again lots of erasing, same thing once done use a very low Gaussin Blur to soften the edges, about a 1.0
Now with the CS programs there is a pen tool, not sure if there is one in PSE7 or not but it's awesome and so much easier to extract with.
Now that I wrote all this, I decided to Google extracting photoshop and I found this one that is on You Tube a video tutorial and it looks like it is for PSE programs so this might be a big help. I watched for a few minutes, he is very clear about what to do, hopefully this will help.

I have PSE 9 (but started with PSE 3!)
Extractions take patience, but they are so worth the effort!

Use the lasso to draw a circle around the subject.
Click "control J" to duplicate the layer.
Click on the "eye" of the original layer to hide it
Then, use the eraser tool to erase the stuff you don't want. I start with a small brush closest to the image (while my eyes are fresh) Once I'm sure I have the close in details done, I use a bigger brush to do the rest.

At that point, you can drag that extracted layer into your layout. OR, delete the original layer and save the extraction as a png for future use.

I agree Stephanie, extractions do take time but worth it.
Carena had told me to save them as png files, I had never thought of doing that before.
Makes it nice and easy if you want to use them again, the hard work is done for the next time.

So glad to have a couple of flowers to add. The frame worked for the 2-word title. The stitching is my own design.

I tried to keep to the hertiage look on the page and am very pleased with the way it turned out. This is my grandmother and grandfather [who died before mom was born]. It is one of the only photos the family has of him. It was taken in 1917 or 1918.

Wow... the pages that are finished are great! This has been a fun and fantastic challenge. Would love to do it again. Elaine, my hat is off to you for coming up the additons for past challenges.... not as easy as it seems. Will look forward to next month's progressive.
